EGD is an exam of the upper gastrointestinal tract examining the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. A long narrow tube with a light and camera on the end called Gastroscope is used in this procedure. You will be restricted from eating solid food for 8 hours prior to the procedure and liquids for 4 hours. A sedative is given through an IV catheter and the procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. After the procedure you are taken into the recovery room until you are ready for discharge.
A colonoscopy is an examination of the anus, rectum, and colon. A long narrow flexible tube with a light and camera on the end called a Colonoscope is used in this procedure. A colon cleansing prep and clear liquid diet is required the day prior to the procedure. A colonoscope is inserted through the anus and gently advanced through the entire large intestine. Air is used to inflate the bowel so the physician can visualize the bowel walls. Polyps, inflammation, cancer or other abnormalities may be detected.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy is done in our Outpatient Endoscopy Center. It is an examination of the anus, rectum, and portions of the left side of the colon. A flexible pediatric colonoscope is used for this procedure. It is inserted into the anus and slowly advanced to the lower part of the colon. This procedure usually takes 5-10 minutes and generally sedation is not required. Unless you are told otherwise, it is not necessary to have a driver with you. There is minimal preparation for this procedure.
Capsule Endoscopy is performed in our Sacred Heart Office. Capsule Endoscopy is a procedure that uses a tiny wireless camera to take pictures of your digestive tract. A tiny camera that sits inside a capsule the size of a large vitamin is swallowed. It helps your doctor examine the small intestine, an area that cannot be reached by upper endoscopy or colonoscopy. It takes thousand of images that are transmitted from sensors placed on your torso to a data recorder that is worn on your waist. It takes approximately 8 hours for the procedure. You will be unable to feel the capsule as it moves throughout your digestive tract.
